Metabolism Module 1 Topic 1 Why Metabolism Matters

9 flashcards · Other · by Haroon Chehabzada

  1. What is metabolism ?

The total of all chemical reactions within a cell

  2. What does metabolism include ?

Includes metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, nucleotides, energy cofactors and vitamins, and secondary metabolites

  3. What are the subclasses of organisms ?

    • Aerobic • Anaerobic • Facultative

  4. What is Catabolism in metabolism ?

Degradatory phase - decomposition reactions; breaks down complex organic molecules into simpler end products and releases free energy

  5. What is Anabolism in metabolism ?

Biosynthetic process; assembles precursor molecules into macromolecular structures requiring input of free energy

  6. What does Anabolism require in terms of cell energy ?

    ATP

  7. What does Catabolism release in terms of cell energy ?

Releases free energy in the form of ATP, NADH, NADPH, FADH2

  8. What do anabolism and catabolaism have in common?

Both occur simultaneously in cells and are regulated independently

  9. Why do anabolism and catabolism have distinct pathways ?

Both pathways must be independently regulated, rate controlling enzymes are at different points in the pathways
