Metabolism Module 2 Topic 1: Glucose Sources
8 flashcards · Other · by Haroon Chehabzada
What dietary sources create glucose and where is it stored ?
Food containing carbohydrates and glycogen
How do you get glucose into the bloodstream ?
diet and stored glycogen
Describe what kind of chemical structure does Glycogen have ?
Glycogen is a branched chain polymer of glucose with a-1,4 and a-1,6 branch points
What does glycogenolysis involve and which bonds are broken down to create glucose 1-phosphate molecules
Glycogen phosphorylase which breaks down glucose through a(1-4) glycosidic bonds
What does the debranching enzyme in glycogenolysis remove ?
Debranching enzyme activity removes a-1,6 links and transfers the 3 remaining glucose residues through a(1->4)
Name 2 disorders related to glycogenolysis ?
• Hers' disease: phosphorylase deficiency in the liver • Cori's disease: debranching enzyme deficiency
What are light waves ?
Light waves are electromagnetic waves that travel through the vacuum of space
What are the properties of light ?
• Light has both wave-like and particle-like properties • It exhibits wave-like properties when it interferes with other light waves It exhibits particle-like properties when it is emitted or absorbed by matter
