The process by which energy is transferred from a warmer object to a cooler object by means of physical contact. i.e. heat conducts from the bottom of a metal pot to the handle
Conduction
A material that transfers energy easily. i.e. copper
Conductor
A passive two-terminal electrical component that stores energy in a magnetic field when electric current flows through it. i.e. an insulated wire wound into a coil
Inductor
A force that resists the sliding or rolling of one solid object over another. i.e. slows a rolling ball until it stops
Friction
Any of various substances that block or retard the flow of electrical or thermal currents. i.e. air in a thermos
Insulator
A form of electricity resulting from the imbalance between positive and negative charges within a material that occurs when electrons (the negatively charged particles in an atom) move from one material to another. i.e. when rubbing hair against balloon, you transfer static electricity to the balloon
Static electricity
Any movement of electric charge carriers, such as subatomic charged particles (e.g., electrons having negative charge, protons having positive charge), ions (atoms that have lost or gained one or more electrons), or holes (electron deficiencies that may be thought of as positive particles). i.e. electrons moving through a charging wire
Electric current
The property of an electric circuit or part of a circuit that transforms electric energy into heat energy in opposing electric current. i.e. a lightbulb
Resistance
A circuit that comprises branches so that the current divides and only part of it flows through any branch. i.e. a parallel circuit with 3 lamps, 1 switch, and a battery
Parallel circuit
A circuit that comprises a path along which the whole current flows through each component. i.e. a series circuit with 3 bulbs, and a battery
Series circuit
A device for opening and closing electrical circuits under normal load conditions, usually operated manually. i.e. a switch for turning a light on and off
Switch
A measure that describes the “pressure” that pushes electricity. i.e. 3 volts
Voltage
The "rate" that current is flowing through the circuit or the number of electrons moving through the wire. i.e. 2 amps
Amps
The unit of electrical resistance in the metre-kilogram-second system. i.e. 4 ohms
Ohms
One if the regions at each ends of Earth's magnetic field where the external magnetic field is strongest to the north. i.e. the north pole
North pole
One if the regions at each ends of Earth's magnetic field where the external magnetic field is strongest to the south. i.e. the south pole
South pole
A vector field in the neighbourhood of a magnet, electric current, or changing electric field, in which magnetic forces are observable. i.e. magnetic field of the Earth
Magnetic field
A device consisting of a core of magnetic material surrounded by a coil through which an electric current is passed to magnetize the core. i.e. an electromagnetic for sorting recycling waste
Electromagnet (solenoid)
flow of electric charge that periodically reverses i.e. The supply you get to your home from utility
AC
flow of electric charge that does not change direction i.e. to supply power to electrical devices
DC
Any machine that converts mechanical energy to electricity for transmission and distribution over power lines to domestic, commercial, and industrial customers. i.e. water turbine
Generator
