How did innovation change with digital transformation
Two Types of Experiments
Convergent experiments divergent experiments Adv Increases knowledge Tests assumptions Looks outside for answers Requires willingness to learn versus decide
Convergent experiments
eliminates options converges on a specific answer to a clearly defined question verify which event is causing the other AB test formal scientific experimental design control groups good sample blind testing digitization: increasingly powerful and affordable due to new technologies
Divergent experiments
explores options generates insights asks multiple questions at the same time generates new questions to explore in the next iterative stage informal experiment group testing digitization: new ways to prototype ideas cheaply and rapidly to show customers
7 Principles of Experimentation
Learn early (start experimenting from the very beginning of your innovation efforts so that you can learn as early as possible in the process) Be fast and iterate Fall in love with the problem, not the solution This keeps you focused on the customer and their needs Focusing on the problem prods you to consider more than one possible solution. You inevitably become attached emotionally to a creative solution Get credible feedback Measure what matters now Test your assumptions Fail smart
TOOL: Convergent Experimental Method
Define the question and Its Variables - dependent and independent variable Pick Your testers Randomize Your Test and Control Validate Your Sample Test and Analyze Decide Share Learning
TOOL: Divergent Experimental Method
Preparation Define the problem Set limits - time, money, scope Pick your people Iteration Observe: deepen your understanding of the problem itself and broaden the range of ideas you bring to bear in finding a solution Generate more than one solution Build an MVP Field test Customer value assumption (first) = Do your customers value the solution? Will they use it? Etc. Business model assumption (second) = How will you manufacture your offering? How much will it cost? Etc Decide - proceed, pivot,…
Scaling Up an Innovation
MVP Rollout: Easiest; You can start your rollout with a limited test market and then iterate rapidly as you gain additional feedback from customers. MVP Launch: Harder; Your business is forced to iterate very quickly after launching your innovation because you are not able to effectively limit the scope of launch Polished Rollout: Harder; You can launch your innovation in limited locations or for limited customers, but you cannot quickly iterate it once it is public. It, therefore, needs to be…
