Precedence / Dependence Table
A table which shows which activities must be completed before others are started.
Arcs on an Activity Network
Represent the activities. Labelled with an activity letter.
Nodes on an Activity Network
Represent the completion of activities known as events.
First Node Name
Source Node.
Last Node Name
Sink Node.
Dummy Activities
Have no time or cost, used to show dependencies between activities.
Representation of Activities
Each activity must be uniquely represented in terms of its events. At most one activity between two events.
Duration
Length of time it takes to complete an activity. Add weights to the edges of the activity network.
Early Event Time
Earliest time of arrival allowing for the completion of all preceding activities.
Late Event Time
Latest time that the event can be left without extending the time needed for the project.
Forward Pass
Calculating early event times by working from the source node to the sink node.
Backward Pass
Calculating late event times by working from the sink node to the source node.
Critical Activity
An activity that any increase in duration results in an increase in the duration of the whole project.
Critical Path
A path from the source node to the sink node which entirely follows critical activities.
Spotting a Critical Activity
The early event time is equal to the late event time.
Total Float of an Activity
The amount of time that an activity's start can be delayed without affecting the duration of the project.
Total Float Formula
Total Float = Latest Finish Time - Duration - Earliest Start Time
Total Float of a Critical Activity
0
Gantt Chart
A graphical way to represent the range of possible start and finish times for all activities on a single diagram.
