  1. When to file IFR

Wx not VFR (1500 / 3SM or required for controlled airspace) Max extent possible Airspace requirements (Class A) Night

  2. IFR Filing requirements

Wx +/- 1 hour not including TEMPO lines are above lowest compatible approach mins Winds are not out of limits AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg52

  3. Filed alternate is required

Compatible approach is not available at the destination airport Wx forecasts indicate less than 2000 / 3SM or crosswinds out of limits during +/- 1 hour from time of arrival (including TEMPO lines) AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg53

  4. Wx required to select an alternate

Ceiling of 1000’ or lowest compatible approach mins plus 500’ - whichever is higher Visibility of 2SM or 1SM above lowest compatible approach mins - whichever is higher Wx +/- 1 hour must support approach and landing under basic VFR if no compatible approach at the alternate AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg54

  5. Alternate disqualifiers

All compatible approaches require an unmonitored NAVAID Airfield does not report weather observations “Alternate not authorized” on all compatible approaches Any note disqualifying the alternate in the “IFR Alternate Minimums” section AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg54

  6. Fuel if alternate is required

Fuel plan must include approach and missed approach at intended destination if visibility-only weather criteria is used at the destination (not required if both ceiling and visibility are used) AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg56

  7. Takeoff restrictions

Do not takeoff when existing weather is below the lowest compatible approach minimums or where thunderstorms or other hazardous conditions exist AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg77

  8. Turns after takeoff

400’ above DER or as required by ATC or by published procedure AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg77

  9. IFR climb performance requirements

Ensure aircraft can meet or exceed 200 ft/NM or the published climb gradient, whichever is higher AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg77

  10. IFR departure methods

Diverse departures (IACO) Omnidirectional departure Obstacle Departure Procedure (ODP) Non-standard takeoff mins Specific routing Visual climb over airport (VCOA) Reduced takeoff runway length procedure (RTRL) Any combination of the above Diverse vector area (DVA) Specific ATC departure instructions Standard instrument departure (SID) MAJCOM certified procedure Special departure procedure (SDP) AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg78

  11. Max speed in the NAS

250 KIAS below 10,000 MSL 200 KIAS below 2000 MSL within 4 NM of class C or D airports FAR 91.117

  12. Minimum IFR altitude

2000 feet above the highest obstacle within 4 NM (mountainous) 1000 feet above the highest obstacle within 4 NM FAR 91.177

  13. RNAV substitute means

RNAV in lieu of broken NAVAIDS AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg51

  14. RNAV alternate means

RNAV in lieu of functional NAVAIDS AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg51

  15. Descent below 100 AGL

Do not descent below 100 TDZE using the approach lights as a reference unless the red terminating lights or red side row bars are distinctly visible and identifiable AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg202

  16. Descent below MDA, DA, or DH

Do not descend below unless the runway environment is in sight AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg202

  17. Landing gear reporting

Prior to the threshold AFMAN 11-202v3 - pg
