Human machine interface (HMI)
- point of exchange between human/worker and machine - ex. control panel, visual display unit, monitor, cell phone
Closed loop system
- feedback and interaction with displays and controls - decision making - based on what you see, experience, and receive as feedback
Automation
- the electrical or mechanical accomplishment of work - anything that helps you do what you need to do
Advantages of automation
1) reduce cost - wages 2) improve efficiency - reduce time 3) increase system productivity - no down time 4) improve safety - not as affected by human error in certain circumstances 5) reduce workload - physical or cognitive
Disadvantages of automation
1) complexity - becomes more complex with use of tool, induced surprises, more parts = increased failure potential 2) undertrust - perceived unreliability, false alarms 3) overtrust - perceived reliability, complacency, misses
Implementation of Automation
1) use good human factors 2) inform operator 3) training 4) introduce gradually 5) make flexible
Implementation of Automation: 1) use good human factors
- consider displays, controls, design
Implementation of Automation: 2) Inform operator
- purpose, when - process status, so that people anticipate it when they come into work
Implementation of Automation: 3) Training
- updates/changes - provide periods of non-automation/manual operation, so production can continue even if its slow - how display information is determined, how the answer is arrived at, is whats on the screen correct, know processes and what they're doing
Implementation of Automation: 4) Introduce gradually
- helps acceptance of new thing and increases it over time - management policy: assistance vs. replacement (for helping and safety, or reducing cost?)
Implementation of Automation: 5) Make flexible
- use automation or not? - degree of automation - choice of customization - override - manual vs. autonomous
