Ductile Fractures
Brittle FRactures
Necking occurs
end of elastic and beginning of plastic deformation.
Identify and sketch in stages of failure,
Fatigue
Brittle Fracture
Little or no plastic deformation Low strain energy before fracture Catastrophic *Intergranular (between grains) *Transgranular (through grains)
Ductile Fracture
Occurs with lots of plastic deformation Small voids begin to form in the metal which then spread through the neck that forms due to stress. Result looks like a cup and cone. -High strain energy before fracture -Quantified by %EL or %RA Process proceeds slowly with appreciable gross deformation at fracture surface evidenced by twisting or tearing. cup and cone looks like this
Failure Stages in a Moderately Ductile Material:
3 types of creep
what types of materials are affected by creep strain rate most, what increases creep?
polymers after strongly affected by creep strain rate, increasing temperature.
creep failure picture looks like circel burn wound will be on exam
fracture toughness
Strength is increased by making dislocation motion ___________
