16 flashcards · Physics · by Samvid Konchada
The capacity for doing work. It may exist in (i.e.) potential kinetic, thermal, helectrical, chemical, nuclear, or other forms.
Energy
Stored energy that depends upon the relative position of various parts of a system. i.e. stretched rubber band
Potential Energy
Form of energy that an object or a particle has by reason of its motion. i.e. bus moving
Kinetic Energy
Internal energy present in a system in a state of thermodynamic equilibrium by virtue of its temperature. i.e. sun's ray
Thermal Energy
Sum of the kinetic energy, or energy of motion, and the potential energy, or energy stored in a system by reason of the position of its parts. i.e. hammer in motion
Mechanical Energy
Energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds. i.e. fossil fuels
Chemical Energy
Energy generated through the conversion of other forms of energy, such as mechanical, thermal, or chemical energy. It is unrivaled for many uses, as for lighting, computer operation, motive power, and entertainment applications. Definition 2: A stream of moving particles or atoms that carry an electrical charge. i.e. electricity through a wire
Electrical Energy
Energy that is released in significant amounts in processes that affect atomic nuclei, the dense cores of atoms. i.e. nuclear power plants
Nuclear Energy
A form of energy that can be heard by living things i.e. sound from a person talking
Sound Energy
Energy that is transferred by electromagnetic radiation, such as light, X-rays, gamma rays, and thermal radiation, which may be described in terms of either discrete packets of energy, called photons, or continuous electromagnetic waves. i.e. light from a light bulb
Radiant Energy
Potential energy a massive object has in relation to another massive object due to gravity. i.e. book on table
Gravitational Energy
Mechanical potential energy stored in the configuration of a material or physical system as it is subjected to elastic deformation by work performed upon it. i.e. a slingshot
Elastic Energy
Different atoms of the same element (same amount of protons) with different amounts of neutrons i.e. Hydrogen-1 (1 proton, 0 neutrons) vs. Hydrogen-2 aka Deuterium (1 proton, 1 neutron)
Isotopes
A nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei. i.e. nuclear reactors
Fission
A nuclear reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei are combined to form one or more different atomic nuclei and subatomic particles (neutrons or protons) i.e. sun
Fusion
The amount of time it will take for one half of a radioactive substance to decay. i.e. uranium-328 has a half life of about 4.5 billion
Half life
