Under NFPA 13, chapter 3 has what section?
Definitions
3.2.1* Approved
Acceptable to authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)
3.3.2* authority having jurisdiction AHJ
An organization, office, or individual responsible for enforcing the requirements of a code or standard or having approving equipment materials, and installation, or a procedure
3.2.3* Listed
Equipment or materials or services that are accepted by the AHJ, and they undergo inspections to see if they meet appropriate standards and or found suitable for specified purposes
Shall vs should
Shell is a mandatory requirement. Should is a recommendation or best practice
3.2.6 standard
Considered shell requirements. Mandatory
3.3.206* sprinkler system
Activated by heat from a fire causing discharge of water over the area of fire. Consists of integrated network of piping designed for Fire Protection based on standards.
What temperature for antifreeze system
40 deg F
3.3.60 Dry pipe system,
Uses pressurized air, the difference in pressure causes water to flip through. Often use in areas that may freeze
Gridded versus looped system
Parallel cross mains are connected by multiple branch lines where branch lies will receive water from both ends of parallel cross means multiple cross lanes are tied together to one looped cross main
3.3.159* preaction system
Use a single double or non interlock system. Has multiple ways of activating.
3.3.206.10 wet pipe sprinkler system
Most common, cost effective and efficient. Water is directly connected to sprinkler head
3.3.8 array
Ways to store columns of objects. Such as open, closed or standard
Arm over, branch line, sprigs, drops, riser nipples, cross main, feed main
3.3.26 ceiling types
flat continuous single panel sloped or horizontal smooth free of significant irregularities
3.3.28 check valve
allows flow in one direction only
Obstructed vs unobstructed
obstructed: panel construction like beams, or trusses impede heat flow (like pocketing) unobstructed: no features or structures that can affect heat flow
Heat does what?
flows
3.3.46* Control Valve
valve controlling flow to water based fire protection systems and devices i.e butterfly
Fire pump
provides more pressure flow of water
Take outs what are they
calculations to make sure system lines up and proven hydrostatics and other related equations prove system works
Residual Pressure
pressure is at a specific flow that has been converted from the pitot reading that was determined in the flow test.
static pressure
pressure with no water flowing.
The three variables needed to graph a water supply are
static pressure, residual pressure, and flow in GPM gallons per minute
Flow test
A test performed by the flow & measurement of water from one hydrant & the static & residual pressures from an adjacent hydrant for the purpose of determining the available water supply ant that location. -
Asterisk *
Indicates there is additional information about the code in the Annex or Appendix.
-Flat ceiling
. Indicates the code wording or verbiage has changed from the previous edition. Vutical Rule 4. A continuous ceiling in a single plane.
[Bracket]
Indicates the code presented in bold is identical in another NFPA standard. It will be the standard number & edition year. Adding
Should
. Indicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not required
Approved
Acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction
Ceiling Light
The distance between the floor & the underside of the ceiling above (or roof deck) within the area. -
Feed Mains
The pipes supplying cross mains, either directly or through risers
Non Cont. Obstr
. An obstruction at or below the level of the sprinkler deflector that affects the discharge pattern of a single sprinkler
Draft Curtain
A continuous material protruding downward from the ceiling to create a reservoir for of heat
Riser nipple
A vertical pipe between the cross main & branch line
sloped
A ceiling with a slope exceeding 2 in 12.
cross mains
The pipes supplying the branch lines, either directly or through riser nipples.
Arm over
A horizontal pipe that extends from the branch line to a single sprinkler or a sprinkler above & below a ceiling
