8th Grade PS Unit 6: Motion
10 flashcards · Physics · by Samvid Konchada
The rate at which velocity changes with time, in terms of both speed and direction. i.e. 5m/s^2
acceleration
Quantity that designates how fast and in what direction a point is moving. i.e. 50km/hr North-bound
velocity
Quantity that describes the rate at which an object covers distance. i.e. 8 km/hr
speed
Property of a body by virtue of which it opposes any agency that attempts to put it in motion or, if it is moving, to change the magnitude or direction of its velocity. i.e. a ball rolling until stopped by friction
inertia
If a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is acted upon by a force. i.e. ball doesn't move unless you kick it
Newton's 1st Law of Motion
f=ma i.e. It is easier to push an empty shopping cart than a full shopping cart.
Newton's 2nd Law of Motion
When two bodies interact, they apply forces to one another that are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. i.e. When a teacher paces behind a whiteboard, they exert a force backward on the floor that causes them to accelerate forward.
Newton's 3rd Law of Motion
The vector sum of forces acting on a particle or object. i.e. two people kicking ball at same time
Net Force
A diagram showing the forces acting on the object. The object is represented by a dot with forces are drawn as arrows pointing away from the dot. Sometimes called force diagrams. Example + image:
Force Vector Diagram
Absolute unit of force in the International System of Units (SI units), abbreviated N. i.e. 5N
