8th Grade PS Unit 7: Simple Machines
13 flashcards · Physics · by Samvid Konchada
Any of several devices with few or no moving parts that are used to modify motion and the magnitude of a force in order to perform work. i.e. lever
Simple Machine
Machines that are formed by the combination of two or more simple machines. i.e. scissors (wedge + lever)
Compound Machine
Measure of the effectiveness with which a mechanical system performs.
Efficiency
Force-amplifying effectiveness of a simple machine i.e. 2
Mechanical Advantage
Simple machine consisting of a sloping surface, used for raising heavy bodies. i.e. a ramp
Inclined Plane
A solid bar that rotates, or turns, around a fixed point (fulcrum); one of the six simple machines. i.e. an on/off switch
Lever
A wheel with a grooved rim that turns on an axle; one of the six simple machines. i.e. crane
Pulley
A simple machine that is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. It can be used to raise and lower weights as well as to fasten objects. i.e. end of light bulb
Screw
A simple machine that has a thick end and a thin end. It is used to cut, split, or pierce objects, or to hold objects together. i.e. door stopper
Wedge
A simple machine that is a wheel attached to a shaft, or axle. i.e. steering wheel
Wheel and Axle
the initial force used to get a machine to begin working i.e. 2N
Input Force
represents the force that a specific object has as a result of the input force i.e. 4N
Output Force
A measure of energy transfer that occurs when an object is moved over a distance by an external force at least part of which is applied in the direction of the displacement. i.e. 2J
